The Norwood Scale

The Norwood Scale is a commonly used classification scale for male pattern hair loss, named after the dermatologist Dr O'Tar Norwood, who developed it in 1975. The scale is used to describe and classify different stages and patterns of male pattern hair loss.

The Norwood scale comprises various stages that represent progressive hair loss from mild to advanced. It starts with normal hair density in stage I and then shows gradually progressive hair loss towards the higher stages. The more advanced stages typically show increasing thinning or complete absence of hair at the front and top of the scalp.

The Norwood Scale is a useful tool used by doctors and hair specialists to assess the severity of male pattern hair loss, discuss treatment options and track the progression of hair loss over time.

Level 1

A minimal change that is often regarded as normal hair growth, with no visible signs of hair loss.

Level 2

Mild hair loss characterised by a slight receding hairline at the temples or slight thinning at the front of the scalp.

Level 3

A further progression of hair loss characterised by a deeper receding hairline at the temples and possibly the first signs of thinning of the hairline in the frontal region. There is also thinning or the beginning of a bald patch on the crown of the scalp.

Level 4

A further progression of hair loss characterised by a deeper receding hairline at the temples and possibly the first signs of thinning of the hairline in the frontal region. There is also thinning or the beginning of a bald patch on the crown of the scalp.

Level 5

A further progression of hair loss that leads to a marked thinning or absence of hair at the top and front of the scalp, with often only a strip of hair remaining at the edge of the head.

Level 6

Advanced hair loss that leads to a further expansion of the bald patch at the top of the scalp, leaving only a narrow line or islands of hair at the back of the head.
